全3D制作的《索尼克大冒险（Sonic Adventure）》采用了前所未有的全3D场景，索尼克的奔跑、跳跃乃至空中的滑行都变得更加自由，游戏的速度感和爽快感也得到了进一步提升。然而新的尝试也带来了新的问题，由于3D空间的原因而首次出现了视角的问题，而游戏的难度也让许多玩家感到不适应。后来世嘉又推出了《索尼克大冒险2（Sonic Adventure 2）》，修正了前作中的一些问题，此外还进一步强化了动作性而减少了冒险的成分。
