Artist Johann Sebastian Bach Type Album Released 1975 Jean-Pierre Rampal (flute), Alain Marion (flute), Gerard Jarry (violin), Pierre Pierlot (oboe), Charles Lormand, Micher Martin (viola), Bernard Fonteny, Alain Courmont, Guy Besnard (cello), Gerard Granier (double bass), Anne-Marie Beckensteiner (harpsicord) Conductor(s): Jean-Francois Paillard First, I would not have known of this recording of the Brandenburgs were it not for Dark_Swordsman sharing it with us in 2009. I've listened to this countless times and the more I listen, the more I love it. Again, many thanks to Dark_Swordsman. I'm very excited to be able to share this copy of the Brandenburg Concertos after looking for a high quality version of it for the last couple years. I purchased my own copy about a year ago and the record seemed to be in great shape. The people at a high-end audio store - I won't say which one - actually let me listen to all four sides of it on their Wilson speakers and I was blown away. A guy who works there offered to rip it to HD 24/96... so here it is, converted to 320kbps mp3. I did not remaster or clean it up in any way and you can hear the pops and crackles of true vinyl. I'd say this rip sounds damn good; at the very least I can hear a lot of things in this rip that I don't notice in others. May it bring you as much pleasure as it brings me

(I'm happy to upload the original HD 24/96 files as well if people want it. )

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful 5.0 out of 5 stars The Finest Recorded Version of the Brandenburgs... ever February 5, 2011 By John Parker Marmaro Let me begin by hoisting my colors: I do not care for "period instrument" performances. I have heard scores of them. And I can honestly say that, far from liking the majority, I have actively disliked them. I probably can count on one (or possibly it would have to be two) hands such recordings i HAVE liked. For me, these performances are dry academic surmises, not music to engage with. (The lack of vibrato playing only exacerbates the caterwauling, nails-on-the-blackboard tocsins that are the sonorities of most "period" renditions.) And yet, nowadays, it is becoming harder and harder to find good modern-instrument performances of Baroque music, and even of high Classical. Indeed, it seems like no one is releasing discs on modern instruments at all. So we are left with older performances... and as this particular one is available, far from being a problem, it is a blessing. Or would be if this would again be issued on CD . This is the most beautiful of all the performances of the Brandenburgs I have ever heard. Of course, one might expect it to be so, with the legendary soloists participating. There is Jean-Pierre Rampal on flute in nos. 2, 4 and 5; the second is blessed with Maurice Andre's impeccable clarino on trumpet, and he also plays one of the two hunting-horns in the no.1; Anne-Marie Beckensteiner's harpsichord provides the continuo throughout, the beautiful solo playing in no. 5, and the splendid cadenza filling out the two-chord slow movement of no.3. All the renditions are splendid, and I especially love nos. 2, 3 and 5. Indeed, the whirling Gigue finale to no. 3 has never been better rendered, nor indeed, have the outer two movements of no. 2 (with Mr Andre's and Mr Rampal's magisterial playing). This has been bounced around from label to label: Erato, The Musical Heritage Society, Sony Japan, BMG/RCA Red Label.... and none were ever in print for very long, it seems. It is about time this classic recording --- which should be a foundation element in any good music collection -- was made available, once more, on compact disc -- and WIDELY!
