The current program a truly fascinating selection of works by several names well-known to western audiences: Long Zhou, Chen Yi and Bright Sheng - all currently residing in the US. The music on this disc is surprisingly "percussive" and at times, even "jazzy." Long Zhou's rhythmic "Wu Kui" sounds almost as if it could have been written by George Antheil, while Wong Qianyi's Toccata has the motoric energy of Debussy's "Jardins sous la pluie" and Sino-Korean composer Quan Jihao's little suite, "Combination of Long and Short" colorfully explores a variety of colors, textures and rhythms based on traditional Korean musical forms.
