A fine chronological overview of James' most productive period, this is a very attractive package that includes informative and insightful liner notes. "Nautilus," "Westchester Lady," "Take Me to the Mardi Gras," "Angela (Theme From Taxi)," "Touchdown," and "Sign of the Times" are among the inclusions. Naturally, this double-disc set can serve any number of purposes: as pleasant, occasionally funky background music, as proof of your extensive knowledge of hip-hop samples, or as cruel torture for your jazz purist peers. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Bob James is credited with raising the profile of jazz fusion within the mainstream, and his influence has resulted in two of his tracks "Nautilus" and "Take Me to the Mardi Gras", being in heavy demand for hip-hop samples. While playing at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963, he was discovered by Quincy Jones. This fortuitous meeting resulted in Bold Conceptions, the first of over thirty solo albums. He has also released several collaborative efforts and is the founding member of the smooth jazz supergroup Fourplay, releasing eight albums under this name.
