In Compose Yourself, beginning on BBC One Northern Ireland on Monday, February 1 at 7.25pm, the stakes are high as in just eight months time the budding young musicians will be playing with Barry’s orchestra, Camerata Ireland in a gala concert at City Hall as part of the Belfast Festival at Queen’s. Barry, who lives most of the year in Paris, is accustomed to playing with the best orchestras in the best concert halls across the world. What he isn’t used to is teaching beginners. So why is he doing it? Well, he believes that music is good for the soul and says: “ I think it’s really important that we as musicians inspire young people to take an interest because art is what makes us all human…it helps us to understand who we are.” So, with the help of Dr Joe McKee and his staff from the City of Belfast School of Music, Barry sets about looking for eight young people to take part in his pioneering musical venture.
