On its unassuming debut album, the Springfield, Missouri quartet not only brings to mind the weightless pop of its now famous Portland counterparts but a fuzzy production style that evokes Of Montreal and gentle romanticism of Elliott Smith. Nowhere more so than on poignant tracks like "Oregon Girl" and the slightly dubby "House Fire," where dueling singers Philip Dickey and John Cardwell trade charmingly out of sync verses such as, "I coughed your name/ I smoked all day/ And I slept myself sleepy." It's familiar, warm, and clearly deserving of a soundtrack to call its own. Their debut is an expertly crafted indie pop gem. Spin declared the Missouri band "could succeed The Shins." Then a slew of bloggers ranked them ahead of Wilco and Iron & Wine in Leafblower's annual "Top Bands Of America Today".
