It's very likely many have never heard of Tokimeki Memorial. But I'm sure the name Konami will be familiar with most! How do these three relate? Back in 1994, Konami decided to try their hand in the dating sim craze and created Tokimeki Memorial, a game which had the protaganist, you, woo several girls in the hope that at graduation one of them would confess her love to you beneath the school yard tree of legend. The main character, and hardest girl to win over, was Miss Shiori Fujisaki. The game went on to become insanely popular in Japan and is quite possibly the most popular dating sim of all time. Thus, it saw the release of all sorts of related merchandise including literally hundreds of music CD's ranging from original soundtracks and arranges to monthly drama discs and vocal image albums. Somewhere mixed in with these was Shiori Fujisaki's Piano Collection. Based on the image songs from Shiori's many vocal albums, which in turn were inspired by the game, this CD may truly be one of the most obscure treasures I've ever stumbled upon. In my humble opinion, it's the most beautiful piano arranged album I've ever had the pleasure to behold. Yes! Even better than Tokimeki Memorial Piano Collection. What I find most surprising about Shiori's Piano Collection is that I've listened to the original songs and they're nowhere as beautiful as these arrangements. I'm certain the reason for this is its arranger, Taro Iwashiro, who not surprisingly also arranged the Tokimeki Memorial Piano Collection. Iwashiro is an amazing talent who's composing credits include Onimusha 2, Samurai X: The Movie as well as various TV and movie scores. Here, he arranges nine of Miss Fujisaki's most popular songs and composes "Wish", a brand new vocal piece for Fujisaki's vocalist, Mami Kingetsu. As for the originals, if you're familiar with them you may have a hard time recognizing their arrangements as they've been slowed and softened to the point that they sound like new compositions. Just imagine notes falling sweetly as a spring shower, yet hesitating ever so slightly in youthful innocence. This may be the best decription I can give this music as simple words alone cannot describe the images and feelings it inspires. Often I will relax and feel the notes flow through me while they paint Shiori's lovely image in my mind. Each piece is filled with sentimentality and warmth, gentleness and charm, all of which equally describe their inspiration. As such, you won't find jazzy chords, frantic strings or melancholic pianissimo here. Even the more upbeat tracks ("Love Reaches the Stars", "Just a Bunch of Memories...") retain the tenderness of her character. The way the pianist conveys these feelings is beyond compare, as if the very keys replaced Fujisaki's own voice and with it every feeling capable of human emotion. Incredibly, I cannot find a single fault with this album. Some may feel it not complex enough, but I have always found elegance in simplicty. Others may find it too low key for a casual listen, that it's more suiting a lullaby. But its these very characteristics that make the music so special. Shiori Fujisaki's Piano Collection's wistful, nostalgic feel will leave you more than content. This is a beautiful CD. I realize I've used that word a lot, but its alternative, pretty, just isn't strong enough: prettiness is seen, beauty is felt. Whether or not you have any desire to listen to it, if you love the piano you NEED this CD in your collection. Sadly, its incredibly difficult to find outside of Japan and will likely require a third-party contact to purchase through Yahoo Japan (I've only seen it on Ebay once, and that copy is currently in my CD player). For anyone willing to put forth the effort, though, you'll find it to be very worth your while
