(1968), which appeared in the U.S. as Gypsy Soul in 1973, and 1958's Stereo Showcase, a sort of demonstration disc of the possibilities of stereo technology. The latter album has never been released on CD before, and it should be snapped up by buyers seriously interested in the easy listening genre. It features tracks introduced verbally by the conductor, who, although named Annunzio Paolo Mantovani, came to England at age seven and was as British as could be. He extols the virtues of the stereo (STEER-e-o, he says) format, telling you that you hear the instruments of the orchestra as if you were sitting in front of them; not really true, of course, but you get a sense of the novelty of the technology in the late '50s. The pieces on the album are chosen to demonstrate stereo effects, and in so doing they provide a little grammar of Mantovani's arrangements themselves. The Gypsy Soul LP revisits some classics of the light music that preceded Mantovani's own, all at least loosely connected to the gypsy theme. A piece like Jenö Hubay's Hejre Kati (track 8) was at the tail end of its popularity, disappeared as easy listening music declined, and is now on the rebound. The orchestration throughout is, naturally enough, quite colorful, with lots of percussion, but the cimbalom heard in the opening track, The Heart of Budapest (composed by the obscure Imry Vidor), is still an unexpected pleasure. The album includes several of Mantovani's own compositions, as well as a pull-out-the-stops arrangement of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Ronald Binge, who was as responsible for the Mantovani sound as the conductor himself. Turntable owers can still get an inexpensive start with Mantovani by heading down to the local thrift shop, but this fine reissue makes a logical next step.
