Australian singer and bassist Nicki Parrott, now based in New York, and clarinetist/tenor saxophonist Ken Peplowski are two of my favorite jazz musicians today. They are firmly based on the tradition of straight ahead jazz, are both leading voices of their repsective instruments, and bring something fresh to the music by their ingenuity. They have not only recorded for Venus but also performed together at at least several jazz festivals on the West Coast. Their sensibilities are perfectly matched, so I expected a superb result when they -- just the two of them -- record together. This CD exceeds all my expectations! As usual, the multi-talented Nicki plays the bass and sings at the same time, while Ken provides great obligatos and wonderful solos. The program is an excellent collection of romantic love songs, mostly standards with a few Lennon/McCartney songs thrown in.
