Marcus Miller has been dubbed the "Superman of Soul" and declared one of the ten most influential bass players of the ‘90s by Bass Player magazine. He has written hit songs for the likes of Luther Vandross and David Sanborn, and his production credits include Vandross, Miles Davis, Al Jarreau, Bob James and Wayne Shorter. He has also played with a list of musicians that reads like a Who's Who of the American music industry, including Miles, Donald Fagen, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, McCoy Tyner, Mariah Carey, Paul Simon, the Brecker Brothers, Joe Sample and George Benson. With the May 22, 2001 release of M2 ("M-squared"), his first studio album since 1994, Marcus Miller deepens the groove of jazz in the new century.
Produced by Miller, the smoothly accessible M2 has something to offer everyone. Using equal portions of jazz, funk and soul, Miller presents nine originals and five classics — "Amazing Grace," John Coltrane’s "Lonnie’s Lament," Charles Mingus’ "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," Talking Heads’ "Burning Down the House" and Billy Cobham’s "Red Baron."
Marcus Miller was born in Brooklyn in 1959 and raised in Jamaica, New York. His father played piano and organ, and jazz pianist Wynton Kelly was his cousin. This musical environment stimulated Miller to start playing clarinet at age 10, and soon after that sax, bass and piano. He studied at New York’s prestigious High School of Music and Art, and later attended Queens College, before dropping out to work full-time and develop his own style. Influenced by the likes of Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke and Anthony Jackson, Miller became a pioneer of many startling bass techniques that are now commonplace. He soon found himself in demand as a rising star in the New York session world.
In 1980, Miles Davis hired him for his comeback band. One of his favorite musicians, Miller credits Davis with having helped him find his own voice on the bass guitar. When Miller left after producing Tutu and Amandla, his career went into overdrive, and he has been a prolific songwriter, producer, and musician ever since.
Miller has also turned his vast experience toward the art of scoring motion pictures, with results that range from the moody, experimental work Siesta to animated features like the soon-to-be released Trumpet of the Swan, along with Eddie Murphy’s Boomerang, to action fare like Low Down Dirty Shame, and the upcoming Sony Pictures film The Brothers.
With an all-star cast and Miller’s distinctive, creative vision, M2 liberates crossover jazz from its conventional form and tonality. Telarc Records proudly announces this exclusive distribution deal with Hannibal L.L.C. and 3 Deuces Records to distribute and market Marcus Miller’s M2. 他能收能放的bass line是我觉得他最厉害的地方,有的时候要喷不喷的,能控制听的人的情绪,另外他的编曲也是一绝,常常把其他艺人的歌改成他自己的风格詮释,像”Talking Heads”的”Burning down the house”就精采无比。除了jazz音乐之外,他也帮人声团体”Take6”制作专辑,甚至电影”Breakin’ all the rules”(超完美分手大全)制作音乐,哈哈,其实看完电影我大部份时间都不知道在演什么,因为音乐实在太酷了。Fender也为他制作了专属model bass。2001的专辑”M2”获得了葛莱美奖,2002”the Ozell Tapes”这张双CD Live的专辑,也展现了他无与伦比的open jam能力。那阵子我几乎每天CD随身听里都是他的歌,2007年底他曾在日本表演一週,是我最接近他Live演出的一次,想说他最近也只会到日本,不会来台湾,所以有一股衝动想衝到日本看,结果碍於经济和工作因素没有衝去。但无论如何,看他的Live演出是这辈子我的愿望之一。Marcus Miller不只让我听到许多精采的funk音乐,也让我多认识了jazz。
