《色·戒》写于上世纪50年代，到80年代才发表。张爱玲的《传奇》以后的作品，大家都关注得不够，而对《倾城之恋》、《金锁记》这些前期作品关注过多。其实此后她还有很长一段创作历程，往往被忽视了。而《色·戒》恰恰是这个阶段张爱玲最重要的作品。
虽然《色·戒》在She'Hui上不大被关注，张迷还是很看重这个作品的，张爱玲自己还写过一篇关于《色·戒》的文章。张爱玲很少写文章为自己的作品辩护，为了《色·戒》，她专门写了一篇《羊毛出在羊身上》。她的小说发表之后，有人批评，她不同意，就写文章加以反驳。我觉得，因为这是她的得意之作，所以才不愿意受到误解。
