This remarkable career now stretches over 4 decades and Al seems to be going as strong as ever. A master of both the electric and the acoustic guitar, Di Meola refined his style over the years. Finesse and delicacy, replaced the youthful zest and energy, as demonstrated on his early albums by his guitar pyrotechnics. The love of Fusion was expanded and enriched by love of World Music, which presents an infinite source of inspiration. The 1990s saw Di Meola getting involved extensively with World Music, when he formed his group called World Sinfonia (with some of the best musicians from all over the world) and recorded a tribute to the great Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla. In 1998 Di Meola signed with the excellent Telarc label, famous for it’s superb sound recording quality, and this is his 4th release on that label. As usual the music is a tasty mixture of fiery Fusion and elegant World Music. Di Meola switches between the acoustic and electric guitar according the mood of the music. Also as usual, he includes some distinguished guests to play along with, this time the legendary Cuban keyboards player Gonzalo Rubalcaba (who adds some of his own fire to the proceedings) and veteran bass virtuoso Anthony Jackson, who played with Di Meola on his early Fusion albums. Although Di Meola usually writes all the music on his albums, this time a Chick Corea composition was also included to celebrate the Di Meola / Jackson reunion. All together another triumphant achievement for Al and a superb musical experience. Most warmly recommended. 数一数也有近三十年光景了。想当年，谁不被这位弹得一手如风似电的结他神童所啟发，Al di Meola确实有过其风光日子。 先被Chick Corea拉进Fusion开山老祖的乐队之一的《Return to Forever》作客，继而连续出版了数张畅销唱片。再於八十年代初得以和John McLaughlin及Paco De Lucia等结他高人合作，这Guitar Trio在世界各地所掀起的浪头可算为巨响，对乐坛影响甚深。而Al的声名在此得以确定外，此刻亦可算是其已达事业之顶峰了。其后所组成的World Sinfonia虽然曾一度搜罗了不少后起新秀及曾有数首佳作，但郤风华不再。而观望今天弹结他的一辈，也没有当年那么多人弹Ovation了。 今回老Al又在Sinfonia的阵势下出新作，在又一个新班底之下加请了低音手Anthony Jackson和古巴钢琴手Gonzalo Rubalcaba来助阵，图在其World的概念上多添一点爵士乐（手）的光采。骤听下去，这张《Flesh on Flesh》的风格和以往的Sinfonia路线没有两样，而编曲方面亦如惯常地紧密多变。但耐心地再听，老Al确实有点进步。首先说其弹奏，撇开其一贯他那年当时髦，如今当老套的的三连音式的弹法不说，其努力尝试突破自限的痕迹明显可见，但仍距离成熟差了一截，听其弹奏抒情小品Meninas便有此感。主题曲《Flesh on Flesh》以明朗的加勒比海节奏伴以Vibraphone作开场引子，但可惜其内涵还是加进了老Al的招牌调味，重手的急速变奏和同步(Unsion)，玩到尾亦好像以烂尾收场般。成熟之所谓，在此可骤见一班。 而在选曲方面，也见是老Al弹奏别人作品来得老实。在《Zona Desperata》和《Senior Mouse》，其结他弹奏也骤见随和，曲目亦符合老Al性情，给他适当空间来发展其所好。反之任其性情而写之作品，就仍是那句老话。 Al喜欢弹用玻璃纤维造的结他，亦沉醉在结他合成器的人造音色的大海中。就是爵士乐手们所误的用脑（技术）多过用心（情感）的乐手。今年初和美国西岸参加爵士乐教育者(IAJE)週年大会上，就曾拖著疲惫的身驱专听其演出（不用另外购票，节目就是这张新作的预演）。可幸的是故人依然肥施大双，不幸的是曲目和演出没个劲儿。就算是龙神虎猛的也可令你打几个呵吹。保留在CD盘上听Al，肯定比在音乐厅的椅上来得轻鬆。曾经在老Al两次来港演奏会出席过的朋友，定必心里有数，知我讲乜。姑勿论如何，这张唱片绝对可以一听，作为背景音乐，Hi-Fi鑑听品也好，但千万别当作爵士乐来当约会，File under World，这是唯一的选择。---JazzBeat Review by Paula Edelstein Al di Meola continues to broaden his musical horizons with Flesh on Flesh, his fourth release for the Telarc recording label. The great guitarist is joined by two members of his World Sinfonia acoustic group -- Gumbi Ortiz on percussion and Mario Parmisano on keyboards -- in addition to such stellar musicians as Gonzalo Rubalcaba, flutist Alejandro Santos, and bassist Anthony Jackson, who recorded with di Meola on his best-selling Elegant Gypsy album in the mid-'80s. Offering classic guitar lines on an array of guitars (including a vintage Les Paul, Fender Stratocaster, and Conde-Romano acoustic), di Meola is memorable, timeless, and true to the beauty, culture and sensual imagery that inspired him to compose and arrange these eight great songs. Each song is a masterpiece, and such compositions as "Flesh on Flesh" (which features him on five different instruments), "Zona Desperata," and "Fugata" (which showcases di Meola trading with Gonzalo Rubalcaba on their Fender Rhodes solo in part three) are just three of the musical statements befitting all who've been lucky enough to see or hear di Meola's phenomenal sound "live."
