The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards took take place on August 28, at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, honoring the best music videos from the previous year. On July 20, the nominees were announced. Katy Perry received the most nominations this year at ten, followed by Adele, and Kanye West, who are both tied at seven. On August 28, 2011, Adele became the biggest winner of the night, winning four awards out of seven nominations, including Best Direction and Best Editing for "Rolling in the Deep". Katy Perry won three awards, including Video of the Year for "Firework". Lady Gaga won two awards, including Best Female Video. Surprise guests Kanye and Jay-Z take the VMA stage for an explosive performance of 'Otis.'

"Love on Top" is a song by American recording artist Beyoncé Knowles, taken from her fourth studio album, 4 (2011). It was written by Knowles, Terius Nash and Shea Taylor while production was handled by Knowles and Taylor. The song's development was inspired by the "passion, honesty, and approach with [her] vocals" that Knowles felt while playing Etta James. On "Love on Top", Knowles adopts her rarely used high range when repeating the song's chorus towards the last two minutes of the song, raising the key by half each time. An up-tempo R&B that is a throw-back to the 1980s music, "Love on Top" exhibits similar styles of Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Whitney Houston and Diana Ross, in the sense that the song follows the same type of retro-soul music complimented with finger snaps, horns and backing harmonies. "Yoü and I" is a song by American recording artist Lady Gaga and was released as the fourth single from her second studio album, Born This Way (2011). Written by Gaga and co-produced with Robert John "Mutt" Lange, "Yoü and I" is a rock and roll-influenced song that samples Queen's "We Will Rock You" (1977) and features electric guitar by Brian May. The song was debuted by Gaga in June 2010 during her performance at Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball.
