This is the fourth album from Hoffman and follows 2006’s Choreography, which AllMusic declared “…gorgeous…” Since emerging onto the music scene in the late 90s, Hoffman has been heralded by critics, with The New Yorker describing her as “…the real thing.” Recorded in Israel, the 10-track album was produced by Hoffman along with fellow musician Assaf Ayalon. Of working with Ayalon, Hoffman explains, “I was excited to have a collaborator who totally got the essence of the songs, but could bring an entirely different palette of sounds and influences to the arrangements.” The material featured on the record is a result of Hoffman’s travels in India, Australia, Virginia, Colorado and Israel during the summer of 2006 and fall of 2007. This global perspective is exemplified in the standout track, “Pictures From America,” which discusses the personal side of the connections and conflicts between America and Iraq as well as Israel and Palestine. Now settled with her new daughter in central Virginia, Hoffman reflects on the making of the record, “This album is about a broader experience of life than just the American experience. It’s about searching and finding something to appreciate in simple or unexpected places. It’s also a little bit about being an outsider.
