A warning note should be sounded concerning the Chaconne rhythm as such, with beginning and point of gravity (as it were) on the second beat. It is obvious that if the performance does not make it clear throughout the whole work that the reigus and not the whole chaconne structure will be phced in the perspective. It is also evident that the cesuras separating the central panel (the one in major) ftom the two "side panels" (as it were), must be particularly impressive; all the more so because the return to the minor mode brings with it a change of mood that tends towards the mehncholy and contemphtive, in contrast to the more affirmative, sometimes lyrical sometimes heroic, first part. Bach s role as an innovator, violinistically speaking, has not been sufficiently stressed. The device of an "apparent" organ point which he uses in the D major sectirm, where he hammers the reiterated 'A" (surcessive/y in three octaves) into our comciousness, is one of many extraordinary strokes ofimtrumental ingenuity.
